The Dirtiest Word

Independence- [in-di-pen-duhns] Freedom from the control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others. Archaic. a competency. Why does that word strike fear in the heart of some men? Is it because the duty of a woman is to stay in the kitchen? If she ventures too far, steak and baked potatoes may never be seen again? Sitting across the room at the doctors office I over heard bits and peices of a conversation two men were having. I heard a tall brunette man say," Well, she wants to complain that life is so hard and I just dont understand her because I'm a man." The other man spoke up and said, "Them women want to blame it all on us but their the ones that ate that damn apple." "I''ll tell you what else, if women could have just stayed home and raised kids like they are supposed to this world sure would be a better place," he stated strongly. "Uh-huh I hear ya," the brunette sighed in agreement.
For ages woman throughout the world have been mistreated woman physically, sexually, and mentally. Even today in Africa, Egypt and muslim countries female circumcision is still practiced. "Behind circumcision lies the belief that, by removing parts of girls' external genitals organs, sexual desire is minimized. This permits a female who has reached the dangerous age of puberty and adolescence to protect her virginity, and therefore her honor, with greater ease."
Throughout history women have fought for their rights, their families, and their faith. So why today when we have the most freedom and opportunity can we not stand up? What kind of road are we paving for our daughters? How will we let them know, with out showing them, that Independence is not a bad word.
